Saxophone Summit
In jazz there are two things that are hard to beat for sheer excitement - if you were fortunate enough to hear the Basie band sitting in the front row of a small club, or catch any of the great tenor battles between Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt. In the old days a horn players reputation was made by participating in the various after hours “cutting sessions”. Sometimes these are caught on record as was Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt’s tour de force - “Eternal Triangle” on Prestige. Woody Mankowski and Tom Washatka are two enormously talented saxophonists who’s credentials as established jazzmen are known to many. And though they are old friends and keenly aware of each other’s music this will be the first time these consummate players will lock horns in what they call a Saxophone Summit - blending tight arrangements and all-out, take-no-prisoners improvisation. Each artist will reach deep into his bag of “tricks” to define himself at the same time listening - with big ears - to the other’s statements. Mankowski - Smooth, Dexter-like, soulful Be-bop. Woody’s ideas leap out with humor and style. Washatka - Big round sound, Coltrane edge, polyphonic. Tom’s phrasing grabs your attention. Mankowski and Washatka - both highly listenable jazzmen on their own - together will tear it up. Bet on it.
