The Lew Tabackin Trio
"Lew Tabackin belongs to a rare species, being a jazz archaeologist and adventurer all at once! Known in the jazz world as having the biggest sound on tenor sax since Coleman Hawkins, Lew Tabackin is a brilliant and emotive improviser at the top of his form. He is a tenor man - as they say - “in the tradition”. The “archeology” of his sound is unearthed from one of the basic building blocks of the language of jazz - Says Tabackin..."If it wasn't for Coleman Hawkins, I don't know what we would sound like”. He also says he early on listened to Al Cohn and later John Coltrane - two wholly disparate tenor concepts if there ever were any. This fact alone is a window into the complete immersion Tabackin has taken his craft, incorporating what the past masters have laid down before. It is a modern sound without jettisoning jazz roots. Lew’s recording output is a variety of mostly trios and quartets. Three of his most recent: “Tanuki's Night Out”, “Tenority”, “I'll Be Seeing You” are thoroughly delightful. His voluminous recordings with the Toshiko Akioshi / Lew Tabackin Big Band is some of the most exciting modern jazz music of the last forty years. His current trio itself harkens back to the piano-less trio of Sonny Rollins. This format opens wide the possibilities for improvisers to create on a broad canvas. Tabackin has also become one of the very few jazz flautists to make a name for himself on this instrument. His recordings and club dates show him stepping out on flute as equally as on tenor. Tabackin and his trio have a bigger-than-life sound, and the Fox Note is an ideal venue to be surrounded by it.
