The Gene Bertoncini Trio
Gene Bertoncini’s distinguished career as an accompanist to singers such as Lena Horne, Tony Bennett and Carmen McCrae, as well as a collaborator with jazz giants Benny Goodman, Wayne Shorter and Chet Baker is well known. He has worked with arranger/composers Lalo Schifrin and Michel Legrand and performed regularly on the Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson shows. But it is his solo work and frequent recordings as a duo and trio (with [eg] Bill Charlap, Jiggs Wiggham and Michael Moore) that has elevated Gene’s artistry to prominence. Gene Bertoncini has established himself as one of the most eloquent and elegant masters of the jazz guitar. His spontaneous and tasteful improvisations reflect an intimate affection for classic jazz as well as the rich harmonies and swinging rhythms of the music of Brazil. Listening audiences love his graceful integration of classical, pop, jazz and bossa nova and guitar players of all stripes flock to his performances to hear and learn his approach to chord voicings. Here’s what the critics say... ...”radiant, infectious optimism”. - The Washington Post ...”a celebration of understated virtuosity, genial companionship and an imaginative seamless interplay that invariably impresses”. - The Edmonton Journal ...”raise[s] the all of soft, seductive jazz to new levels of grace and adventure”. - The Boston Herald Gene’s sidemen this evening will be Ike Sturm - a bassist with an acute sensitivity of the Bertoncini landscape, and percussionist Dane Richeson whose understanding and passion for all things rhythmic is a logical and compatible choice.
