Known primarily early in his career for his strong lead big band playing (with Woody Herman and  Buddy Rich) and studio work, trumpeter Bobby Shew has over many years successfully established his jazz soloist credentials. Says Shew...”In my case - I’ve always felt a really deep, spiritual need for jazz playing, and once you’ve been touched by that real understanding and feeling for creativity in that particular form - it’s something that you can never put down. I guess you become addicted to it; it becomes a life - blood kind of thing”.  His most recent CD releases are testimony to his keen sense of style and creativity.

“Playing With Fire” (w/Tom Harrell), and “Heavyweights” (w/Carl Fontana) are two excellent CDs that showcase his artistry.  Shew’s recording on Seabreeze Records titled “The Music of John Harmon” is a highly regarded collaboration of two jazz world heavy weights. Bobby’s Cd, “Outstanding In His Field” was nominated for a Grammy in1980, while, “Heavy Company” was awarded the Jazz Album Of TheYear in 1983.

Though jazzers are very familiar with Shew’s association with some of the best orchestras of the 20th century including Bill Holman, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin, Oliver Nelson, Nat Pierce-Frank Capp Juggernaut, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson, and Neal Hefti to name just a few, we have all unconsciously heard his playing on many TV shows and movies including: Hawaii 5-O, Streets Of San Francisco, Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, His work on soundtracks includes Grease I and II, Rocky I and II,  The Muppet Movie, and Taxi.

Pianist John Harmon is well known to Fox Note audiences as both a featured artist and as a first call sideman for dozens of groups over the years. As well as being a monster instrumentalist John’s many thoughtful and very personal compositions are always a highlight of any of his performances. This evening his reuniting with his friend Bobby Shew will produce many bright musical moments.
